EAC 2024 in Stockholm, Sweden – from May 31st to June 2nd

Time to plan for the next European Aniridia Conference (EAC). The next scientific European Aniridia Conference (EAC) will be held in Stockholm, Sweden, on May 31st – June 2nd, 2024. Aniridia Sweden is honoured to be able to host this biennial conference that brings together researchers, practitioners and diagnosis carriers, as well as industry representatives, to share the latest scientific know-how, experiences and ideas about the rare genetic condition aniridia and aniridia-related diseases. We would like to share some information with you and also to inspire you to start distributing information to others about this exciting event.

Encourage participation of your scientific community
Since 2012 when the first EAC was held in Norway, a fantastic development of significant importance has been taking place in the scientific community regarding aniridia and aniridia-related conditions. These scientific conferences are an opportunity to meet, share experiences and plan for future research, which is essential for future successes. We need your help to encourage your scientists and related professionals to participate in the next EAC. Sometimes national associations have been able to sponsor one or more participants financially to enable their participation, so please consider this possibility too.

The conference website is in place
We have set up the conference website where you can find more practical details about the conference, and more information will be added continuously. You can visit the website at https://aniridiaconference.org/eac2024/.

Introducing the European Aniridia Leadership Academy
As we all know, being a diagnosis carrier is not always easy nor is it to find young diagnosis carriers to engage in our associations and networks. We are planning to introduce a European Aniridia Leadership Programme (EALA) to be held in parallel with the other EAC meetings for young diagnosis carriers aged 18–30yrs. The Leadership Academy will only be open for selected candidates who have been pre-approved by Aniridia Europe and the organiser. Each national aniridia association will be able to nominate 1-2 persons for the academy. The call for nominations will be open until January 10th, 2024. Even though the programme is separate from the other EAC meetings there will be a possibility to mingle with the participants of the scientific conference and the Nordic meeting, for instance in a joint reception and dinner at Stockholm City Hall hosted by the City of Stockholm and the Stockholm Region. More information on EALA will be published in a future post. (Paragraph was updated on 2023-10-24)

Participation in the scientific conference
As a tradition it has always been important in our community to create the possibility for diagnosis carriers and their loved ones to be able to participate in the scientific conferences. This possibility will be available also this time. Having said this, we would like to remind you that it is a scientific conference where the language used will be English medical terminology language, which often can be difficult to follow if you are not a professional. At the end of the conference there will be a Q&A session for diagnosis carriers where the main topics and results of the conference will be summarised in more simple English.

Nordic Aniridia Meeting
In addition to and in parallel with the EAC there will also be a Nordic Aniridia Meeting (Nordiskt möte) for diagnosis carriers and their loved ones held in the Scandinavian languages. This meeting is only for members of the aniridia associations from the Nordic countries.

Registration
The registration is planned to open in Mid-November 2023. There will be a very favourable early-bird discount for those registering before January 31st.

Thank you for helping us to make this event a success, and we hope to see many of you in our beautiful capital in May. Please feel free to get in touch with us regarding any questions at conference2024@aniridi.se.

Kindest regards,
Neven Milivojevic
Chair of the Organisational Committee EAC 2024
